What Zookeepers Do Date: November 12, 2011 FULL Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. In this workshop we will see if you have what it takes to take care of zoo critters! We will find out about the variety of animal diets that are prepared daily at the Zoo, take a peek behind-the-scenes at the diet kitchen, and practice training techniques that help zookeepers to manage the Zoo’s diverse animal collection!
Behind the Scenes Date: March 10, 2012 June 16, 2012 October 6, 2012 Time: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Ages: Families with children ages 6 and up This workshop is an exciting experience that gives you and your family a once-in-a-lifetime chance to go behind closed doors at the Buffalo Zoo! Meet zookeepers as we visit three exhibit areas to learn the daily routine of preparing animal diets, observing behavior, training and more. Don’t forget your camera Important Notes: Due to the unpredictability of animals, tour experiences may vary. Please be aware that we will be visiting confined zookeeper work areas with close proximity to wild animals. All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult. All participants must abide by staff instructions at all times. If you require reasonable accommodation as a result of a disability or other reasons, please call 995-6128 for assistance.
Purr-fect Pets Date: April 14, 2012 Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Do you have a house tall enough for a giraffe? Or a pool deep enough for a whale? Of course not! If zoo animals do not make good pets, then what animals do? In this workshop, we’ll explore the differences between wild and domestic animals, and then have a behind the scenes opportunity to observe how we care for our zoo animals. Using that information we will relate the characteristics and needs of zoo animals to the domestic critters that make purr-fect pets!
Zoo School Date: September 8, 2012 Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. As students head back to school to learn new skills, our animals at the zoo continue their year-long training! Have you ever wondered how a zookeeper trains a sea lion to flap its flippers or a parrot to mimic a sound? In this workshop we will discover how zookeepers use training to display animals’ natural behaviors, showcasing how they act in the wild. We will observe animal behavior and practice training techniques that help zookeepers to manage the Zoo’s diverse animal collection!
Beast Feast! Date: November 17, 2012 Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. How would you prepare a Thanksgiving Feast for a rhino or a gorilla? Find out in this family workshop that begins with a light continental breakfast (for you)! We will then explore zoo animal diet and nutrition, observe zoo animals enjoying their breakfast, and even go behind-the-scenes to explore the diet kitchen.
